Conrail’s 23 year history concluded on June 1, 1999 when it was divided between CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern. Conrail’s New York Central System Water Level Route between New York City and Chicago was one of “Big Blue’s” busiest mainlines, as the non-stop action in this video recorded between Buffalo, NY and Erie, PA clearly demonstrates.
Beginning at Buffalo’s Frontier Yard, locations seen include RB, CP Draw, CP 2, Blasdell Jct, Angola, Silver Creek, Dunkirk, Brocton, Westfield, Ripley, North East, Harbor Creek, and Erie. The variety doesn’t stop with the colorful locomotive lashups on the TV, freight, mineral and passenger trains seen, but includes weather ranging from beautiful sunshine to raging snowstorms, as well as a look at the NS’s NKP mainline which parallels this route.
