In the mid-60s Frankfurt (on the River Main – here is yet another Frankfurt in Germany) decided to convert much of its streetcar system to rapid transit. Interestingly, they decided to do it incrementally. The U2 car was the result and it also proved a practical solution for no less than 7 North American cities. On this ride we can see how it attains heavy rail capacity on the trunk shared by 3 lines, and the ride continues on the longest and perhaps most interesting of the 3 branches it serves. This program includes extensive views of the surroundings, and required more than 5 trips to do this city to complete. It also includes some historical stills of the older cars during the transition to the U2. The branch we ride continues well into the country running interurban style along the road side and there are single track segments. Finally there are some views of the new cars which began service with the U2 in 1997 and will eventually replace them
