The Ann Arbor RR was unique among railroads, with its Lake Michigan car ferry routes dwarfing the 292 miles of track between Toledo, Ohio and Frankfort, Michigan. Volume I of Vignettes of the Ann Arbor features the Super 8mm films of Emery J. Gulash and Edward Durnwald, taken during the autumn of 1980. Alco RS-1's, RS-2's, and S-3's join EMD GP-35's as they visit Hallett, Milan, Ann Arbor, Whitmore Lake, Clare, Boon, Yuma, Mesick, Thompsonville, Elberta, and more.
This video's second half spotlights the present-day Tuscola & Saginaw Bay Railway. Beginning in Elberta with scenes of the carferry SS City of Milwaukee, locations include Cadillac, Clare, Shepherd, Alma, Owosso, Durand, and Howell. A brief look at the Grand Traverse Dinner Train in Traverse City supplements onboard and trackside views along the TSBY.
