Like spokes on a wheel, four major railroads converged on Marion, Ohio from five directions. For the New York Central, Chesapeake and Ohio, and Pennsylvania to cross at one location would assure a busy junction, the addition of the Erie Lackawanna would elevate Marion to its "Trainwatching Capital of the World" status.
Marion native Joe Slanser documented the EL in the Marion area during the 1960's, as well as the changes taking place on the Pennsy and Big Four. "Vignettes of the Erie Lackawanna - Volume 1" covers the first decade of the "Friendly Service Route" in Marion, and samples the operations of the other three roads.
The EL was noted for its electric motive power consists, and Joe's films show why. PA's, E-8's, Geeps, F's, and SD's were to be found in any combination, and on almost any type of train. Combine this practice with one of the sharpest paint schemes around, at one of the country's busiest junctions, add some NYC, PRR, and C&O, and you have "Vignettes of the Erie Lackawanna - Volume 1".
