VIGNETTES of the Reading Company
Incorporated in 1833 to carry coal from Central and Southeastern Pennsylvania to waterfront connections in Philadelphia, the Reading Company fulfilled this need until its 1976 inclusion into Conrail.
The Reading Company was also the favorite railroad of Allentown, PA Native Charles Houser, Sr. who filmed The Company's 4-8-4's, 2-8-0's, 4-6-2's, 2-10-2's and 2-8-8-0's during the late 1940's and 1950's at locations including Tamaqua, Lansdale, East Penn Jct., and Gordon. Diesel coverage of FT's, F-7's, TrainMasters, AS-16's, FA's, RS-3's, RDC's and GP-30's continues through the 50's and 60's at Bethlehem, Allentown, Rutherford, and Perkasie. Included also are MU cars on the North Penn Branch, rate footage of Mack Truck's ill-fated NYNH&H Railbus testing on the Reading, camelbacks on the Ironton RR, a brief look at subsidiary Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines, and the last run of "The Berksie" doodlebug on April 9, 1949.
